The North of England’s financial-technology sector has quietly become a major economic force. A new report from Whitecap Consulting finds that fintech is adding around £5bn a year to the Northern economy — a figure projected to rise to £6bn per annum by 2030.
The North of England Fintech Report, launched at a FinTech North event, counts almost 400 fintech firms employing roughly 20,000 staff directly. Include fintech roles within the wider financial services and technology sectors, and that figure rises to around 70,000 people. This is no niche: it is a cluster spanning Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and beyond, built on the region’s deep banking, insurance and software heritage.
From strength to strategy
What gives the report its edge is that it doesn’t stop at celebration. Whitecap sets out five ‘big ideas’ to accelerate the sector, including a pan-Northern FinTech Accelerator, a FinTech Investment Fund, an Innovation Challenge, a Placements Programme and a Financial Services Reskilling Programme. The common thread is coordination — knitting together a sector that is strong in pockets but fragmented across cities into something that can compete nationally and internationally.
Why it matters for the North
Fintech sits at the intersection of two things the North already does well: financial services and digital. Leeds is one of the UK’s largest financial centres outside London; Manchester has a fast-growing tech base; Newcastle and Sheffield add specialist depth. The opportunity the report identifies is to stop treating these as separate local stories and start treating them as one Northern sector with national weight.
A £5bn contribution, rising to £6bn, is the sort of number that should command policy attention. The question the report poses to the region’s mayors and investors is whether they will back the connective infrastructure — funds, accelerators, skills pipelines — needed to turn a collection of successful firms into a genuine fintech powerhouse.
