South Yorkshire has set out one of its boldest economic plans in years. Mayor Oliver Coppard has unveiled a new Mayoral Development Zone for the Don Valley Corridor — a scheme promising more than 10,500 new homes and 18,500 new jobs across an area running between Sheffield and Rotherham.
The zone stretches from the heart of Sheffield through Attercliffe, Tinsley and Templeborough into Rotherham Gateway, the town centre and Bassingthorpe. At its core sits a genuine national asset: the Don Valley is the UK’s largest research-led advanced manufacturing and materials cluster, spanning some 2,000 acres and built around the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).
The numbers
South Yorkshire leaders have welcomed a £1.3bn boost tied to the plans, which are projected to attract around £1.2bn of private funding and grow the regional economy by £1.3bn. The National Wealth Fund has signalled support for the corridor’s ambitions, and the South Yorkshire mayor will have access to £85m of new money to back jobs and development, including in the Don Valley and the wider Sheffield innovation spine.
Building on real strength
What sets the Don Valley apart from many regeneration zones is that it is not starting from scratch. The AMRC has spent years drawing the likes of Boeing, McLaren and Rolls-Royce into research partnerships, making this stretch of South Yorkshire one of the most advanced manufacturing ecosystems in Europe. A Mayoral Development Zone gives that cluster the planning powers, land assembly and investment focus to scale — turning a celebrated research base into homes, jobs and supply chains.
For Sheffield and Rotherham — towns and a city with deep industrial roots — the Don Valley Corridor is a chance to anchor the next era of advanced manufacturing where the last one was built. It is, as local leaders put it, a bet on “the beating heart of the North’s industrial strength.”
