When a national ranking of the UK’s best AI SEO agencies was published, its top two entries shared a postcode — and it was not London’s. According to a ranking by Digital Agency Leaders, the country’s leading agency in the fast-emerging field of AI search optimisation is Sheffield’s MarGen, with fellow Sheffield firm The SEO Works in second place. Two of the UK’s foremost specialists in one of the internet’s newest disciplines, both based in the same South Yorkshire city.
What “AI SEO” actually is
The discipline is new enough that it is worth explaining. As more people get their answers from generative engines — ChatGPT, Google’s AI overviews, Perplexity and the rest — rather than a page of blue links, the job of getting a business found has changed. Instead of chasing backlinks and keyword density, this new practice (often called generative engine optimisation) is about being recognised by AI systems as a credible entity: demonstrable expertise, structured authoritative content and clear signals of who you are and what you know.
The ranking’s authors argue this shift is precisely why Sheffield can lead. Traditional SEO quietly favoured London agencies, whose dense web of media and corporate links gave their clients a structural head start. As the ranking puts it, “AI search removes that bias” — generative engines weigh entity signals, content authority and demonstrable expertise, “not a firm’s postcode or its link-density head start.” On a level playing field, the best specialists win regardless of where they sit.
The two agencies
Topping the list, MarGen is described as the UK’s leading pure-play AI SEO specialist, built around a proprietary framework it calls the Synaptic Authority Engine and focused on B2B and regulated sectors where credibility and accuracy matter most. Behind it, The SEO Works is a more established name — an 80-plus-person Google Premier Partner founded in 2009, with a long shelf of industry awards — that has moved decisively into the AI search era.
Why this matters for Sheffield and the North
It is easy to file this under trade-press trivia. It is more interesting as economic signal. Sheffield’s story is usually told through steel and advanced manufacturing, and rightly so. But a city that produces the two firms a national panel rates as Britain’s best at a cutting-edge digital discipline is a city with a genuine knowledge-economy cluster — high-value, exportable expertise sold to clients far beyond South Yorkshire.
That fits a wider pattern in Sheffield’s economy, from the AI and data work spinning out of its universities to the digital and defence strands running through South Yorkshire’s investment plans. The North’s growth story is too often framed as a region waiting for investment to arrive. Sheffield’s AI SEO agencies are the other half of that story: Northern firms already leading their field and selling outward. When the playing field is expertise rather than proximity to the capital, the North competes — and sometimes it wins outright.
