Middlesbrough has offered its clearest picture yet of a scheme big enough to reshape the town. The council has released a first look at the next phase of Middlehaven, a plan to bring thousands of homes to long-disused dockland in the original heart of the town. As Middlesbrough Council set out, the first phase will begin turning empty land beside the historic dock into a new residential community.
Building where the town began
There is a neat symbolism to it. Middlehaven sits on the site where modern Middlesbrough started, the docks that made it an industrial power in the 19th century. Much of that land has stood empty for decades. The plan is to make it a place people live again, close to the centre, the college and the football stadium. As Insider Media reported, the public is being invited to help shape the plans.
Homes near the centre
The strategy is the sound one. Rather than pushing new housing out to the edges of town and onto green fields, Middlesbrough is putting it on brownfield land in the middle, where the infrastructure already exists and where new residents can support the shops, bars and services of the centre. It is the same logic driving town-centre regeneration across the North, and it is the right one. A denser, more lived-in centre is a healthier one.
From render to reality
The honest caveat is the usual one: a first look and a public consultation are a long way from finished homes, and large regeneration schemes can sit on the drawing board for years. But the direction is clear and correct, and Middlesbrough has a track record of pushing Middlehaven forward phase by phase. Reclaiming the dockland where the town was born, and filling it with homes, is a fitting and serious ambition.
