Blackpool’s biggest bet on its own future is now rising in the town centre. Construction is under way on the £65m Multiversity, a carbon-neutral education campus that forms the fourth phase of the town’s £350m Talbot Gateway regeneration. As the Blackpool Gazette reported, work has begun on a building due to open in 2028.
Education as regeneration
The Multiversity will deliver more than 70 courses across further education, higher education and lifelong learning, and is expected to bring up to 3,000 students and staff into the centre of Blackpool. Supported by £40m of government funding, it is designed to strengthen the town’s skills pipeline, the single biggest thing a place like Blackpool can do to lift long-term wages and opportunity. As development partner Muse has set out, it sits within the wider Talbot Gateway programme reshaping the area around the tram and rail interchange.
Why skills are the right target
Blackpool’s challenges are well documented, and they are not the sort a coat of paint fixes. A seasonal, low-wage economy needs its people to have the skills to command better work, and that means education at the heart of the town, not on its edge. Putting 3,000 students and staff into the centre also does something more immediate: it brings footfall, spending and life into streets that need all three, all year round rather than just in summer.
The long game
This is patient, unglamorous investment of exactly the right kind. A campus does not transform a town overnight. But over a decade, a steady flow of graduates and trained workers, and a town centre with thousands of people in it every day, is how somewhere like Blackpool builds an economy that does not depend entirely on the weather and the season. The building will open in 2028. Its real effect will be measured in the 2030s.
