Huddersfield’s biggest regeneration scheme in a generation is now on site. Kirklees Council has approved the next stages of Our Cultural Heart, the flagship project within the £210m Huddersfield Blueprint. As Our Cultural Heart confirmed, the scheme has moved into its delivery phase.
What is being built
Phase one is already under construction: a new library hub, a food hall and a public square, on track to open in summer 2026. Phase two will turn the town’s much-loved former library building into a museum and art gallery, wrapped in new public space, with work starting this year and the doors due to open in 2029. As LocalGov reported, the wider programme is expected to create hundreds of jobs and to hand residents free-to-access cultural and green space in the middle of the town.
Culture as the anchor
The choice of anchor is worth noting. Plenty of struggling town centres have tried to fix themselves with more retail, and watched it fail as shopping moved online. Huddersfield has bet instead on a reason to come into town that a website cannot copy: a library, a food hall, a gallery, a square. Get people through the doors for those, and the cafés, bars and independents around them stand a chance.
The test ahead
The plan is sound and the timeline is real, with phase one weeks from opening. The harder test comes next. Cultural anchors only lift a town if the streets around them are ready to catch the footfall, which means the empty units near the new square need occupiers, and the transport links need to hold up. Huddersfield has made the difficult decision, to build for culture rather than chase retail back. Whether it pays off will be judged not on the buildings, which look the part, but on how busy the surrounding streets are two years after they open.
